Episode 06: Publish Talent

Episode 06: Publish Talent (1:16:33)

Whether or not you’re a computer scientist, I think everyone realizes that the Internet is a big deal; mostly because of the democratizing nature of the Internet. It’s cheap and easy for anyone to publish anything on the web! We know you’re a unique and creative person, and you should share your musical, writing, video, programing, podcasting, artistic, and social talents on the Web. Today, we’re here to help you do that.

First a note on STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The U.S. has turned a corner, now U.S. universities graduate more foreign STEM students than American students, and the U.S. is quickly loosing ground on the total number of STEM researchers. What does this mean for you? Select a STEM major and get paid! We’re here to encourage/help you do that- we know that universities can put a high barrier of entry onto these programs, but we’ll help give you a leg up!

So how do you get on the Internet? Well, that is what we talk about today– what skillz you need to get published, how to get published, and how to do things from very low cost (free) to specialized costs. We even talk about what and why you should publish on the web.

We do have a couple of important points about publishing in the show. First- get your own namespace on the web by registering a domain! This is simple, easy, and cheap ($10 a year) and it gives you a clear and dominating presence on the web. There are plenty of domains available, go grab yours today! Second, create a following. It’s fine to publish just for yourself, and in private, but the Internet is specifically well suited for community generation! Finally, we also tell you how to deal with copyright issues.

As always, we’re looking for you to participate (speaking of communities). Follow us on Twitter, friend us on our Facebook page, comment on our blogs, email us, we really want to hear from you! If you have a blog, vlog, YouTube Channel, website, etc. Comment a link to your stuff so we can check it out!

CAN YOU SEE US?? The listeners? I was knitting a sock while listening to the latest episode. Seems like more than just a coincidence to me!
“Embarrassment is not a terminal illness. You will recover” is not only a great statement to keep in mind when giving publishing to the web a shot, but useful while leading a life in general.
