Episode 28: Simulating Fun

Episode 28: Simulating Fun (01:00:16)

Well, we’ve been promising it for a while– a show on gaming (“Compressing ideas about tech, society, and gaming into tiny packages of podcasty goodness”)– but we haven’t gotten around to it until today. We didn’t quite know how to talk about gaming, though, so we took more of an apologists stance on gaming, and discuss casual gaming vs. so called ‘hardcore’ gaming.

The video game industry is a giant money maker. After all, who else survived the current recession without a dip in sales? Video game releases are now doing as well as blockbuster movie releases, and some even better. Ten Billion apps, many of them games, have been downloaded from the App Store, casual games like Wii Sports are selling 75.6 million copies! Clearly this is an important economic area for discussion.

The societal impact of gaming is just as important as the social one. Who are these tweens on multiplayer with mouths fouler than sailors? Why is the U.S. Army using video games to train its soldiers? What exactly is a casual gamer? These questions and more we answer on today’s episode!
