Welcome to our first, post-podcast screencast! Today we are moving to more advanced topics, and delving into descriptors a new style Python object that allows you to override attribute access, setting, and deleting and manage properties on classes and instances in a more formal, dynamic manner. Today we will explore how to use descriptors to create validating attributes using regular expressions.

Episode 52: One Year Later (00:44:50)

That’s it, show’s over– nothing to see here– just tons and tons of episodes to listen to! That’s right, The Zipline Show is now on it’s final episode, and it’s been a great year of talking about Rockets, Nuclear Power, Scientists in History, Technology, Programming, WiFi, Digital Publishing, Copyright…. *whew, so much stuff! We’ve had a great run, but we said at the beginning that this would be a year long project, and now that it’s October again, we’ve officially made it!

Today we reflect about the past year of shows and talk a little about the production of our Podcast. We go a little crazy since this one is on video, but over all we just enjoy recording our last show. You should definitely listen if you want to find out the inside information about the show– not that we ever really kept it hidden! We even have a couple of success stories from the show and talk about the missteps that we may have taken over the course of it.

Thanks everyone for listening, we really hope you enjoyed it! Don’t worry, though — the show won’t go away. If you haven’t listened to past episodes, maybe now is the time to catch up? We’ll still be here for discussion, comments, twitter, etc. as well. Not to mention we’ll continue to do Screencasts, videos, and look for Ranger’s Logs from Project Dawn Ranger!

We even did a crazy in-studio video version that is superior to the podcast in almost every way. You should seriously consider watching it!

Episode 51: Gradually Penultimate (00:49:10)

This, our penultimate episode, is all about graduate degrees in STEM fields. We’ve touched on a lot of this information in the past, but we wanted to wrap it all up into one nice package of podcast for you to take with you.

We kick off the show by talking a bit about how you can prepare for graduate studies while you’re still an undergrad. What are the best classes to take? How important is GPA? We answer those questions and more! Of course, after you’ve done your undergrad, how do you choose a graduate school? What kind of research are you going to do? Fear not, we cover that as well.

Remember that next week we’re publishing episode 52: our last podcast. After that we’ll be doing screencasts and starting up Project Dawn Ranger (we’re got logos)! Make sure to keep in touch, because we’re not done doing stuff!

Episode 50: Coming to You by Bitstream! (00:45:17)

Today we talk about buying things that are sent to you via digital distribution. Well not just anything- movies, software, music, tv, books, apps, movies, etc. Yes I said movies twice. We used to get these things along with some sort of physical media, a nice package, and plenty of tape. More and more, though, content providers are giving us these things through the Internet with zero packaging and zero guarantee if you lose them. We try to decide if this is good or bad for both the consumer and the company.

This discussion then brings us into the wonderful land of net neutrality. We have to discuss it, mostly because we’re concerned about it, and also because we were headed down a copyright road that we tend to go down a lot.

For our fair eared listeners, here is some fair warning. Towards the end of the episode Ben uses a potty word when he realizes he hasn’t been recording on his end the entire time (we’re professionals). Needless to say, if you have young kids and they’re potting training, you may want to put ear muffs on them. It doesn’t earn us an explicit tag- but it definitely comes out of no where!

Episode 49: Project Dawn Ranger (00:38:31)

We’re so excited– we’re going to SPACE!!! Ok, not us, but our cameras are, we’re going to take a picture of SPACE!!! Ok, at least we think we are. Today is Ranger’s Log for stardate 7 September 2011 (I never really knew how to do star dates), and we are going to introduce to you, Project Dawn Ranger!

It’s always been our dream to take a picture of space. Pretty much we thought we’d have to be an astronaut to achieve this, but recently we have become aware that all that physical activity may not be necessary. Instead, we’re going to strap a camera to a balloon and take the picture that way! Are we crazy? Maybe. Is it going to be awesome? Yes!!

As the show winds down, we’re going to find ways to keep you guys entertained and do awesome things. Project Dawn Ranger is our next big project, so follow along as we fall face first into awesome!
